In the 1950s, the Northants Dog Training Club began as the Northamptonshire Alsatian Club but soon expanded to include all breeds. By 1955, it officially became the Northants Dog Training Club. Training initially took place outdoors at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Sheep Street, Northampton. The club's commitment to training saw them register with The Kennel Club in 1956 and hold their first Open Obedience Show in 1959.

During the 1960s, the club continued to grow, establishing branches in Blisworth and Corby and expanding its training venues. The Open Show entries soared, reaching a record 401 in 1966. Successes included winning the Team Shield at Leamington Guide Dog Show and achieving a notable presence at Crufts.

Moving into the 1970s, the club relocated to Kings Heath Baptist Church rooms. Notable achievements included the honour of judging the Obedience Championships at Crufts and participating in demonstrations at Northampton Town Show.

The 1980s saw the club facing challenges with the passing of long-term member and instructor Ron Lines. However, they honoured his memory with an annual competition among local clubs. Members also achieved success outside the club, with one member reaching the National Finals of the Pedigree Petfood's competition.

Entering the 1990s, the club celebrated its 30th anniversary with a grand Open Show and continued to thrive, organizing special events like a Fun Day at the Obelisk Centre. As the new millennium dawned, the club moved to its current venue at Cogenhoe & Whiston Village Hall. Successes at Crufts, including a flyball team victory in 2002, showcased the club's ongoing dedication to training and competition. Additionally, the club contributed to community events, such as organizing a Companion Dog Show for a local park event.

Throughout its history, the Northants Dog Training Club has remained committed to promoting responsible dog ownership and fostering a community of skilled dog trainers.
